Autumn with the theatre
Autumn at our sixth-form college was all about theatre. On 30 September, the pupils attended a performance of Molière’s *The Miser* at the Tadeusz Różewicz Theatre in Gliwice. It was a new production directed by Jarosław Tumidajski, which had premiered at the end of May. This contemporary, light-hearted and humorous interpretation of the classic comedy portrays Harpagon – in a vivid performance by Adam Krawczuk – not only as a miser, but also as a man obsessed with control. The production demonstrated that the 17th-century text still has much to say about money, family relationships and love.
In October, however, we went to an afternoon performance at the Teatr Rozrywki in Chorzów, where we watched *Lalka* (*The Doll*), based on the novel by Bolesław Prus and directed by Mikita Iłynczyk from the Teatr Dramatyczny in Warsaw. The production, starring Marcin Bosak as Wokulski, was one of the entries in the 23rd National Festival of Directing ‘Interpretacje’, competing for the Konrad Laurel. The pupils had the chance to see this well-known school reading material presented in a modern interpretation by a young director and to experience the atmosphere of one of Poland’s most important theatre festivals.
Both outings convinced us that the classics can be brought to life and made accessible to young audiences. We’d like to invite you to our next theatre outings!
