On the 14th of January, 2018, for the 14th time in our School and for the 26th time in Poland (and not only!), we celebrated the Finale of The Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity. It was hot, colourful, happy, and effective. We broke the record once more. It is wonderful that among us, Poles, there are still people so willing to share with others. The Headmistress, Ms Jolanta Kałuża, has actively supported the action since 2005 (as a volunteer), both financially and as an organiser. So has the Vice-Headmistress, Ms Danuta Kałuża-Freyre, and dozens of teachers. Our students’ Parents support us in many ways, too.
Przemek Dudek, a student of the second grade from our high school, described the event in the following way:
So, we play once more (until the end of the world)...
1. What?
As every year, our school (Melchior Wańkowicz Private High School) participated in a national charity action, the Finale of Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity. Thanks to the hard work and our students’ entanglement, we managed to collect more than 81000PLN.
2. Why?
Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity has helped people in need for 26 years. Almost everyone knows somebody who has benefited from the Orchestra’s help. Personally, I know two peers of mine who would not make it if it wasn’t for the incubators with a red heart sticker.
3. How?
Our team, number 127, consisted of over 150 volunteers. Each one of them spent the whole day outdoors, despite the nasty weather. They did their best to collect every grosz for our purpose. Moreover, until now (as I am writing these words), there are auctions during which kind people can win items donated to us (special thanks to a gentleman who donated a wonderful pedicab).
4. Who?
I would like to be able to enumerate every person who helped us, but there would not be enough space. If I were to choose one person, however, I would choose Mr Janusz Woźniak, the coordinator of our team, the architect of this Finale and many previous ones, and my class teacher. Of course, I would not be able to sleep at night if I did not thank Mr Jurek Owsiak, who is a national Mr Janusz, or even bigger than national.
5. Despite what?
As I have already mentioned, the weather was not very pleasant, but we collected all the donations possible as the people of Katowice walked down the streets in search of shopping despite poor natural conditions.
Also, it wasn’t just the weather that wasn’t very warm. Some people (without a reason) are really cold-hearted when it comes to Orchestra and Mr Jurek Owsiak. As far as I am concerned, I was called a thief (only) 6 times.
6. What? (Yeah, again!)
The day ended with a beautiful fireworks show, the so-called “light to heaven”, fully funded from the money collected especially for this purpose.
That’s all from our student. A student of a school where the ideas of carrying help, tolerance, equality, and empathy, are strongly present.
Sie ma, until the next time.
