From October 8th to 10th, students from our International Baccalaureate (IB) classes completed an educational trip focused on the history, geography, and culture of Lower Silesia.

Our itinerary included several key regional landmarks.

  • Złoty Stok Gold Mine: We began with a visit to the former mine. Students learned about the history of gold and arsenic extraction—a mineral that, alongside gold, made this place one of the most important mining centres in Europe. We had the opportunity to see Poland's only underground waterfall and learn about historical mining techniques.

  • Mountain Treks: The following days were dedicated to exploring the Table Mountains (Góry Stołowe). A walk through Kłodzko preceded trekking in the region.

    • Błędne Skały (Errant Rocks): We navigated a rock labyrinth, formed by the weathering of sandstone. This reserve provided an unconventional lesson in geology and spatial orientation.
    • Szczeliniec Wielki: Ascending the highest peak of the Table Mountains (919 m a.s.l.) allowed us to admire expansive panoramas of the region.

One of the most powerful moments of the trip was the visit to the Chapel of Skulls (Kaplica Czaszek) in Kudowa-Zdrój (Czermna). This site, unique in Poland, has its walls and ceiling lined with nearly 3,000 human skulls and bones. This monument, serving as a testament to the victims of epidemics and wars, provided a point for reflection on mortality and history.

Our trip was a team-building exercise, but it combined learning with cultural and social experiences.
